Milestone Green Shipping Decarbonisation Breakthrough in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has taken a pivotal step forward in maritime decarbonisation. On 5 March 2026, the methanol dual-fuel ro-ro vessel CM HONG KONG successfully finished Hong Kong’s inaugural green methanol bunkering operation. Around 500 tonnes of ISCC EU-certified green methanol were supplied via ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering mode.

On-site Bunkering Execution

The bunkering service was delivered by Daqing 268, a dedicated bunker vessel equipped with professional methanol bunkering qualifications. The successful operation verifies Hong Kong’s mature on-site operational capacity to support alternative marine fuel supply for transiting vessels.

Besides corporate collaboration, the project gained official policy backing under the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government’s official Green Shipping Strategy.

Regional Industrial Chain Verification

The successful STS bunkering has validated a closed-loop regional green methanol industrial chain across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, covering raw material production, cross-regional transportation, offshore bunkering and vessel end application.

Hong Kong’s Long-term Green Bunkering Targets

In line with Hong Kong’s Green Marine Fuel Bunkering Action Plan, the HKSAR Government sets a clear 2030 target: raising the proportion of green fuel adoption among Hong Kong-registered vessels to 7%. Hong Kong also aims to build a top-tier Asian hub for green marine fuel bunkering.
