Baling Petrochemical Hits 931,900 Tons Cumulative Caprolactam Output After Project Startup

As reported by China Chemical News, as of July 27, 2025, the 600,000 tons/year caprolactam industrial chain relocation and upgrading project of Hunan Petrochemical has produced 931,900 tons of high-quality caprolactam and sold 669,000 tons since its single-line startup in December 2023.

Besides stable high-quality output, the overall operation performance of the facility keeps improving continuously. The service life of each furnace burner has been extended from 86 days to 150 days. The annual effective production time rises by 10% compared with the old plant, and the overall unit capacity is lifted by 30%. The comprehensive energy consumption of synthetic ammonia drops by over 20 percentage points, while key material consumption indicators including ammonia and coal outperform design targets.

The fluidized-bed technology adopted for hydrogen peroxide production fundamentally eliminates intrinsic safety hazards of the hydrogen peroxide process. The world’s first dual production line for esterification cyclohexanone sets new daily output records. Four core integrated innovative technologies are applied in the caprolactam unit, enabling the distillation section to run stably for more than 600 days consecutively — far exceeding the domestic industry average record of merely 180+ days.

Taking pure benzene and coal as primary feedstocks, the Hunan Petrochemical caprolactam project adopts domestically developed third-generation SE water-wall coal-water slurry gasification technology for coal-to-hydrogen production. The full process route is as follows:

  1. Cyclohexanone is produced from pure benzene and hydrogen via cyclohexene esterification hydrogenation;
  2. Hydrogen peroxide is synthesized from hydrogen and air through the slurry anthraquinone process;
  3. Cyclohexanone reacts with hydrogen peroxide via ammoximation and liquid-phase rearrangement to generate caprolactam;
  4. Caprolactam is further polymerized to produce polyamide (nylon).
